The current leaves the battery at the positive terminal and reaches the first junction. On the left side of the circuit, we can see a three cell battery supplying 1.5 Volts to the circuit. They are connected by multiple conductive paths. ![]() In this circuit, R1 and R2 are connected in parallel. Resistors are simply components that provide a defined amount of electrical resistance to any current that passes through them. In the circuit diagram below, two components called resistors (R 1 and R 2) are connected in series with each other to complete the circuit. Series CircuitsĪ series circuit is formed when components are connected via a single conductive path with each other. Let’s take a closer look at series and parallel circuits. Throughout this course, we will see examples of how to solve problems that are increasing in complexity and learn how to understand and use some of the most important types of circuits. Let’s continue our introduction with a brief overview on what these terms actually mean. In this module, we’ll learn about resistors, capacitors, and inductors in series, parallel, and series-parallel configurations. There are rules for solving series circuits, as well as rules for solving parallel circuits. One of the most important things to remember is that every component behaves differently when arranged in series versus parallel. The first step to understanding electric circuits is being able to recognize when components are in series, parallel, or a combination, as well as the effect these configurations have on the circuit itself.

Setting the gravity to -10 sent the particles upward rather than falling back to earth. I ended up using "Particle Playground" for the smoke. Side note: All 3 particle system effects were really fun to play with. Initially I had the green light going out at the first burst of sparks, but after playing around I found it much better looking with the light flickering back on then off with each burst. Turning off the birth rate stopped new sparks from being created, but the existing ones still lived for their expected lifetime. In all 3 spark layers I used keyframes to go from a birth rate of 0 to the max for that layer within 1 frame and set it back to 0 few frames later. For the biggest burst of sparks I used the settings below:įor the second and third spark bursts I made copies of the first spark layer and dialed down the velocity and birth rate a little. To do this, I created a new "Solid Layer" (background color doesn't matter) and then applied the "CC Particle System II" effect. I tried "Particle Playground", "CC Particle World" and "CC Particle System II" in order to get the sparks. I also added a drop shadow to the traffic light body and set Opacity=75%, Angle +120 degrees, Distance 5 and Size 15 (to soften the shadow). This gives the lights a more rounded appearance I added a "Bevel and Emboss" layer to all 6 of the light layers with a "Softness" property of 15. I'm planning on staying close to the course example but adding some of my own flair. This will be my first time using After Effects. They are meant to provide meta information that can be accessed at run time and then used to shape the behavior of the program. In fact, annotations are primarily targeted towards reflection. AnnotationsĪnnotations are an important part of reflection. If a static method is to be called, the instance argument will be ignored and can hence be null. The other arguments will be passed on to the called method.Ĭontinuing the openConnection example: openConnection. An interesting detail of the latter is that the instance on which the method is to be called needs to be passed to it as the first argument. To call the underlying member they offer methods like Constructor::newInstance and Method::invoke. The instances returned by these calls are of type Constructor and Method, respectively. forName ( "" ) // `URL::openConnection` has an overload that accepts a Method openConnection = type. Here’s a method that does: Class type = Class. The getMethod("toExternalForm") call above did not specify any types because the method has no arguments. Similarly, specific methods can be accessed by calling getMethod and passing its name as well as the parameter types. To get a specific constructor, the getConstructor method can be called with the types of the constructor arguments as I have done above. That instance can be used to get fields, methods, constructors, and more. In its simple form this static method just takes a fully qualified class name and returns a Class instance for it. The gateway into the reflection API is Class::forName. Extensible applications that want to load user-provided plugins at run time are another use case. Spring and other web frameworks act similarly when looking for controllers and request mappings. Think about JUnit, for example, that wants to execute all methods that are annotated with Once it found them with a class path scan it uses getMethod and invoke to call them. Most use cases for this occur in “frameworky” environments. As a consequence, instead of having to settle on URL and toExternalForm at compile time, they could be decided upon later when the program is already running. But this way, details that used to be baked into the code (like that I use URL or which method I call) becomes just a parameter. Using the reflection API is of course more cumbersome than writing the code directly. getMethod ( "toExternalForm" ) Object methodCallResult = method. newInstance ( "" ) // fetches the `toExternalForm` method and invokes it on // the instance that was just created Method method = type. ![]() forName ( "" ) // fetches the constructor that takes a `String` argument // and uses it to create a new instance for the given string Constructor constructor = type. Here’s how I would do the same with Java’s reflection API: // the gateway to reflection is the `Class` instance // for the class you want to operate on Class type = Class. I decided at compile time (meaning, when I was writing the code) that I wanted to create an URL object, and call some method in it. First as plain Java code: URL url = new URL ( "" ) String urlString = url. Instead of building from the ground up I want to start with a simple example. Knowing about annotations unlocks a separate section. ![]() To get the most out of it you should have a good understanding of how Java is structured, specifically what classes and methods are and how they relate. After it you will be ready to get started or work through longer tutorials. ![]() This quick tip is intended to give you a high-level understanding of what reflection is, what it looks like in Java, and what it could be used for. With them it is possible to interact with types that were not known at compile time, for example to create instances of an unknown class and call methods on them. To that end, Java’s reflection API offers types like Class, Field, Constructor, Method, Annotation, and others. ![]() at run time and to defer the decision on how to use them from compile time to run time. For some, studying poetry is China’s equivalent to studying the Bible: a way to learn the written language and a source of inspiration or entertainment. Students in school now study works from a thousand years ago or more, and elementary students are often required by either school or their parents to memorize collections of ancient poetry. This stability of language (and Confucian values of respect for elders) played a huge role in the strong legacy of ancient Chinese literature both in China and overseas. To this day, written Chinese characters have changed very little. Though there were once varying versions of the characters, different by region, the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang, with his unification of the warring states, also mandated a unification of writing systems. The Chinese characters are based on meaning, not sound - this is why it was so common to find Chinese characters exported to neighboring countries like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam - though the spoken languages might be wildly different, the written versions languages would be easily decipherable. Chinese, as a written language, changes very very slowly, to the point that people now would still be able to understand the Analects of Confucius, written over two thousand years ago. ![]() Most people don’t read his works unless required to, and then they forget the contents shortly after, mostly for reasons such as difficulty to understand and irrelevance to modern life.Īll this is not the case with Chinese. ![]() Shakespeare, perhaps, is one of our most studied writers, and still most of us remember only the most basic ideas: Romeo and Juliet were in love, Hamlet had some family drama. In fact, English changes so quickly that the language one thousand or two thousand years ago could hardly be called English at all.Īnd because of this phenomenon, studies of literature in school extend only to works a few hundred years old anything older requires a translated, modernized version or else a prerequisite of ancient English study. The further we go back in time, the less likely it is that our versions of English would be mutually intelligible. Our language, based on phonetics, is rapidly changing - if we were to go back in time, not only would we have a difficult time understanding our predecessors’ speech, but we would be at a loss reading their inconsistent spelling, outdated vocabulary, and strange versions of our modern letters. ![]() As members of American and English-speaking society, it’s hard to relate to the literary culture of China. ![]() You can also look at the websites, apps and support groups below for more support.
